What Is Basketball? Basketball is one of the world’s most popular and widely viewed sports. Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a rectangular court. The objective of the game is to shoot a ball through a hoop 18 inches in diameter and 10 feet in height and score as many points as you can in 4 quarters, 12 minutes each.

Origin Of Basketball In early December 1891 Dr. James Naismith invented the sport basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. James Naismith made the sport basketball so he had something for his gym class to do to keep active on a rainy day. When Dr. James Naismith first invented basketball the hoop and net we now use today was a peach basket and every time someone scored it had to be poked out with a long dowel (stick).

Equipment Basketball doesn’t require a lot of equipment like other sports, such as hockey and football. All you need is a ball, shoes, and a hoop. However, there are extra things that you can wear, like compression clothing, protective padding for your elbows and knees, and specialized basketball shoes.

Positions A team usually consists of 10 players, with 5 players on the court at once.

Positions The five positions are point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. Point and shooting guards are usually the people with best ball handling and take the ball up the court. Small forwards are usually slightly smaller and more agile than power forwards and are able to shoot the ball well. Power forwards are usually big and strong and are able to drive to net. Centers are usually the biggest on the team and they are able to post up and get the rebounds.

Levels Of Basketball The highest level of basketball you can play is the NBA (National Basketball League). Right below the NBA is the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), which is University Basketball. And, below the NCAA is High School Basketball. The highest level of basketball you can play outside of school is AAU (American Athletic Union), which has recently come to Canada.

Michael Jordan Michael Jeffery Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. In my opinion I believe he is the best basketball player of all time. He won 6 NBA championships in two threepeats, while also getting playoff MVP every year he won his 6 NBA championships. Also, he has gotten 5 NBA MVP awards.
