AUGUST 29th, 2018 DO NOW #5 1. What does DRY in DRY MIX stand for? 2. What does MIX in DRY MIX stand for? 3. When would you use a line graph? 4. Compare and contrast independent variables and dependent variables. 5. What is Science? 6. What is something that goes in the conclusion of a lab? FIRST FIVE CHECK Pick up your materials. Find your seat. Organize your desk and prepare for class. Write down homework. Begin Do Now.

DO NOW #5 Answers What does DRY in dry mix stand for? The dry in dry mix stands for dependent variable, responds to change, y axis. 2. What does mix in dry mix stand for? The mix in dry mix stands for manipulated, independent variable, x axis. 3. When would you use a line graph? You would use a line graph when tracking one change in response to another change or when plotting change over time.

DO NOW #5 Answers 4. Compare and contrast independent and dependent variable. The independent variable is what the experimenter MANIPULATES and the dependent variable is what the experimenter MEASURES. 5. What is science? Science is the process of inquiry. 6. What is something that goes in the conclusion of a lab? A general description of what occurred in a lab, whether your hypothesis was supported or disproved, and things you would do differently are all things that go in the conclusion of a lab.

VERBAL DRILLS Name a part of a graph. Title, x axis, y axis, scale, key. Independent variable… Manipulate Dependent variable… Measure Which graph do you use for percentages? Pie chart What is our class motto? BE UNCOMMON What are our class goals? 100% of students will surpass the district average on the EOC. 100% of students will demonstrate 75% mastery on course standards.

August 29th, 2018 Objective: I can describe how water’s structure contributes to its unique shape and properties. Essential Question: How do the unique properties of water allow for life to exist on earth?

water Unit 2

Introduction to the Case study What is red tide?

Red Tide article Rules – One pager 1 – title/border 2 - questions 3 - pictures 4 – key facts Keep for end of unit

By the end of the unit we will…. Determine the cause of red tide and create solutions to prevent it in the future

It all starts with…..water

What is the Structure of a Water Molecule? 1. Water is composed of 1 oxygen atom and 2 hydrogen atoms. 2. The oxygen has a negative charge and the hydrogen has a positive charge. 3. The hydrogen atoms are always in the “ear” position. Draw this in your notes with the charges

A B D C Practice Which diagram of a water molecule is correct? Choose the answer AND explain why. A B C. Ears and correctly labeled charges D C

water is polar Polarity- The state of having 2 opposite ends water is polar Molecule O and H are bonded to form one water molecule with slightly (+) and (-) ends What else has a positive and negative end? When do we use the word polar? **** talk about polarity before the structure of water molecules!!!!

What is Hydrogen Bonding? The bond between the oxygen (O) and Hydrogen (H) atoms of different water molecules and other polar molecules The positive H is attracted to the negative O of other water molecules. Hydrogen bonds are weak allowing water to move and reform bonds often

Water is Special Due to its Polarity and hydrogen bonds Water's polarity allows it to have special properties: 1) dissolve other polar substances very easily Like dissolves like Polar molecules do not dissolve Non-polar molecules 2) The polarity of water allows water to form Hydrogen Bonds Hydrogen bonds cause other special properties like cohesive and adhesive behavior, high specific heat, and expansion upon freezing.

What are water’s 4 Properties? While watching the following video make a two column chart: Property of Water Definition

Exit Ticket #5 What is the molecule make up of water? Water is a ____________ molecule Hydrogen has a _____________ charge Oxygen has a _______________ charge What type of bonds allow water to connect to other water molecules?
