Unit 4 Pictionary

Words

“Going to” What are you going to do this weekend? Do you have anything special planned for the long weekend? (On F,S,S) I am going to … (include information who, what, where, when – if possible) -------------------------------- (Are you going to / Do you have) any special events (soon / coming up)? I am going to (go/see/watch/meet/ (have) a birthday party) … Are you looking forward to it? Yes, it’s going to be great. No, it’s probably going to be boring.

Going to (future) Is used to talk about plans and intentions, especially when someone has already made a decision. I’m going to buy my girlfriend something for her birthday. Is used to make predictions about future actions and events (usually with a reason): It’s going to rain. She’s going to be really annoyed if I don’t buy her anything.

Form (p35) Statements: subject + be + going to + verb She’s going to be 50! Yes / No Q’s: be + subject + going to + verb Are you going to have a party? Information Q’s: WHQ + be +subject + going to + verb? What are you going to do for your birthday?

Some more practice What are you going to do during winter vacation? What are you going to do after graduation? What big thing do you want to buy next? Are you going to have a big wedding? Where are you going to hold it? (honeymoon?)

Indirect and direct objects We use indirect objects to often tell “who” we are going to do something for. I’m going to buy my mother a necklace. The person can come after but we need to use a preposition. I’m going to buy a necklace for my mother.

Buy, give and send Three of the most common verbs used with indirect objects. I’m going to buy I’m going to give I’m going to send Indirect object pronouns (me, you, him, her, us, them) may also be used as indirect objects.

Talk about … If you have a (BFF/B.F/G.F) what are you going to get them (as an anniversary present, etc)?

Lesson A - Birthdays Practice saying the correct number and date. When is your birthday? Your lunar birthday? What about your siblings or parents? What date do exams start? When does BIFF start and finish?

Lesson B Future with present continuous To talk about arrangements they have already made. What are you doing to do for NYE? (arrangements) Be going to suggests the idea of intentions. What are you going to do for NYE? (intend or plan)

P.C vs going to (future plans) There is little difference in meaning between be going to and the PC to talk about future plans. Be going to but not the PC can also be used to talk about predictions of events It’s snowing. (ongoing action) It’s going to snow. (prediction)
