Presentation transcript:

How can you find an objects mechanical energy? Mechanical energy is the energy associated with the motion, position or shape of an object. It is a combination of potential energy and kinetic energy. It is measured in Joules (J) Formula: Mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy

Practice figuring out energy  Potential energy = 12 J Kinetic energy = 10 J Mechanical energy = ?? Potential energy = ?? Kinetic energy =20 J Mechanical energy = 32 J Potential energy = 120 J Kinetic energy = ?? Mechanical energy = 312 J

What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? Energy can neither be created nor destroyed… it just changes form 

What is thermal energy? It is the total kinetic and potential energy of the particles in an object. It is the reason why you feel heat when the particles in an object move quickly.

Review Questions: How can you determine an objects mechanical energy? What is the law of conservation of energy? An objects ________ is due to its position, its shape and its motion. The law of conservation of energy states that when one form of energy is _______ to another, no energy is lost in the process. When potential energy changes to kinetic energy this is called an ___________ When you rub your cold hands together to warm them up, you are feeling _______ energy.
