My Dog Read this poem. My dog is the cleverest animal of all, He doesn’t just chase and catch a ball. With eyes open wide, He hurts when I hide. He performs marvellous tricks, Builds me camps out of sticks. He’d never growl, scratch or bite, But scares my friends if they fight. My dog is my very best friend, And I’ll look after him until the end. Anon

My Dog Main focuses: How does the writer describe his dog? What is the relationship between the dog and the poet? My Dog What kind of things the dog doesn’t do? What kind of things does the dog like to do?

Food for thought: What kind of writing is this? Why does the poet write about his dog? Do you think he likes his dog? How do you know? Give a name to the dog. Give your reason. Do you like dogs? What kind of animals do you want to rear as pets? Give one reason.

Tips for teaching poems It is essential for every reader to know and appreciate the whole poem. Never divide the class into groups and give each group part of the poem to learn. It is important for learners to show their involvement and enjoyment through facial expressions and eye contact. Clear speech and accurate pronunciation are of paramount importance.
