The Human Eye: Structures. We will look at the following parts:
 Cornea: ◦ Tissue that forms a transparent, curved structure in front of the eye ◦ Refracts light before it enters the eye  Retina: ◦ A layer of cells.
The Human Eye. The human eye is similar to a camera!! Light enters through an opening, is focused through a lens, passes through a light-tight (dark)
The Human Visual System The Eye. Anatomy of the Human Eye Cornea Pupil Iris Sclera Retina Optic Nerve Lens.
Pg  The Eyeball The Eyeball  Iris: coloured part of the eye that opens and closes to let in more or less light. In the centre you find.
12.3 Lens Technologies and the Human Eye
The Human Eye. Refractive index of lens different for each wavelength (colour) Cool colours (blues) appear closer; warm colours (reds) further away Agree?
Eye Conditions HCT II. Amblyopia Lazy eye (amblyopia) is decreased vision that results from abnormal visual development in infancy and early childhood.
How The Eye Works Insert name/ Practice name/ Logo here if desired.
18.4 Seeing Light Pg
VISION the sense we rely on most often. Photoreceptors in the eye are sensitive to wavelengths of light energy called the visible spectrum.
Disorders of the eye. Astigmatism Myopia - nearsightedness Hyperopia - farsightedness Presbyopia Color blindness Cataracts Glaucoma Conjuctivitis.
Cornea- The clear covering at the front of the eye that lets light rays into the eye.
Light – Part 3 Defects in Seeing Year 7 Science. Review from last lesson We learned in our last lesson about the major parts of the eye and their function.
Quiz 4 – Vision and Colors 1. Most refraction in the eye occurs at the a) cornea b) fovea c) lens d) pupil.
Spook Fish. Eyes How We See Eye Anatomy Nocturnal Eye.
The Human Eye. In many ways, the human eye is similar to a camera. Light enters through an opening, is focused through a lens, passes through a light-tight.
Myopia (Nearsighted) Eyeball too long Distant objects focused in front of retina Image striking retina is blurred Correction: Concave lens or laser surgery.
THE EYE The eye is the receptor organ that is highly specialized to trap light and very sensitive to changes in the immediate surroundings. It is located.
Coordination and Response in Plants and Animals
Minds-on. The Human Eye The Eye vs. the Camera The EyeThe Camera Opens and closes to adjust the amount of light that enters The IrisThe diaphragm.
Lens Applications.
Parts of the Eye. Cornea: protects the inner eye whilst letting light in Aqueous Humour: clear and colorless liquid that supports the shape of the cornea.
The Eye.
6.1 Human Vision.  Light enters the eye through the pupil  The iris (the coloured part of the eye) controls the amount of light entering the eye  In.
How can we use lenses to correct vision?

Presentation transcript:

6. Ciliary muscles -- system of muscles that attach to the periphery of the lens that changes its shape. 7. Vitreous humour -- transparent jelly-like material that maintains the eyeball's shape. 8. Retina -- photosensitive cells that line the back of the eyeball. Light is converted to electricity. 9. Fovea -- center of the retina. point of most acute vision. 10. Optic nerve -- nerve that sends electrical messages to the brain.

(Myopia) can see near but not far. Eye Defects 1. Nearsightedness (Myopia) can see near but not far. Result of a long eye ball. Fix: diverging lens Either with glasses or contacts. Or with LASIK surgery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-YkzgfgN2k&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7VRghAtwXU&feature=related

2. Farsightedness (Hyperopia) can see far but not near Result of a short eyeball Fix: converging lens Either with glasses or contacts. Or with LASIK surgery

3. Astigmatism Can’t focus well at any distance Result of a cornea that is asymmetrical Fix: cylindrical lens Either with glasses or hard contacts or soft contact lenses called torque lenses. Or with LASIK surgery

Result of a non-transparent lens 4. Cataracts Pupil looks milky Result of a non-transparent lens Causes: hereditary, U-V exposure Fix: removal of lens through surgery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyFmpL1gFVE&NR=1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poGJSFLmrnc

5. Glaucoma disease of the optic nerve Result of pressure build-up of Aqueous Humour tends to happen over long periods No cure. Is ususally treated with drops to reduce pressure marijuana can be prescribed.

Result of protein deficiency 6. Kerataconus disease of the cornea Result of protein deficiency cornea weakens and grows to cone shape hard contact lenses can be worn at first if it progresses too much cornea transplants must be done http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix4VUATDyFc&feature=related

Result when blood vessels enlarge and cause the Retina to detach. 7. Macular Degeneration disease of the retina Result when blood vessels enlarge and cause the Retina to detach. Affects the central vision first Is usually treated with drugs Macular degeneration electronic fix

8. Night-blindness disease of the retina Retina lacks “rod” cells that give us night vision No cure

disease of the retina 8. Colour-Blindness Results from a lack of one or more cone cells Person tends to confuse colours Most common is Red-Green Affects about 1 in 10 males and 1 in 400 females.
