Research Essay

Methods During the work time provided you will want to: Read your research Plan your essay 3 Subtopics Type your outline for speech Submit both your presentation and a works cited page Paper or Electronic (e-mail/usb)

Grading See Provided Rubric. We will be looking for: Introduction Body Hook, explanation of topic, thesis statement Body Topic sentence, evidence, citations for all evidence, direct quotations Conclusion Reprised hook, final comment, restated thesis Works Cited Page

Introduction Hook Basic Explanation Grabs your reader’s attention Types: Descriptive scene Interesting statistic or fact Engaging question Quotation Anectode Basic Explanation Describe your topic as if your reader has NO knowledge No facts requiring citations here

Introduction Thesis Statement Last sentence of your introduction Previews what your reader will learn by the end of your paper. Should include: Topic addressed explicitly Your overall conclusion The main points you will make throughout Ex. The now extinct Western Black Rhino could have been saved if there had been interventions put into place to stop the poaching for sport and medicine and destruction of their environment.

Body For each body paragraph you need: Topic Sentence Evidence In-text citations for each fact

Body: Topic Sentence Topic Sentence Addresses what you will discuss in that particular paragraph Ex. The Western Black Rhino began to dwindle in numbers due to a rise in poaching.

Body: Evidence and Citations All facts must be cited All facts must be in your own words unless a quotation 2 citation options: 1. parenthesis after the fact Ex. In addition to poaching for animal parts, sports hunting also had a widespread effect on rhino populations. Body: Interpretation These are your own ideas Consider some of the following questions: What conclusion can you draw based on your facts? Why are they significant? How does your evidence prove your thesis statement?

Conclusion Contains: Reprised hook Final Comment Thesis Revisit the thesis from your intro to bring your essay to a close Final Comment Thesis Restate from your introduction

General Formatting and Guidelines Use a legible font (times new roman, arial, cambria, calibri, etc.) in 12 point font NO 1st person pronouns throughout your paper (I, you, they, etc). Include a properly formatted works cited page. Look at the example page given. Use a Kellogg heading INDENT PARAGRAPHS

Finally… You know this stuff, and you’re going to rock it out. Pay attention to details and use your class time wisely
