Protein Synthesis

Review Questions: 1) What are proteins Review Questions: 1) What are proteins? 2) What are the 3 types of RNA and their functions?

Protein Synthesis Overview Proteins are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body. 2 Step Process Transcription Translation Codes

Transcription DNA  mRNA

Step One: RNA Polymerase unwinds DNA Template Strand: the strand of DNA that is used to code for the mRNA. DNA unwinds

Step Two: Free nucleotides combine to form an mRNA strand. A codes for T codes for C codes for G codes for

Step Three: mRNA leaves the nucleus and travels to the ribosomes.

What is a Codon? Every 3 letters of the mRNA strand is called a codon. Each codon codes for a particular amino acid. Question: How many different amino acids are there? Question: What are amino acids?

Circle the Codons!

Translation mRNA  Protein

Translation Step One: mRNA attaches to the ribosome and gets read. Step Two: tRNA brings in the appropriate amino acid depending on the mRNA codon. Step Three: Ribosomes form peptide bonds between amino acids. Step Four: Polypeptide continues to grow until a stop codon is reached and the newly formed polypeptide chain is released from the ribosome.
