What is a social problem? A problem in society.

Social change aims at changing a culture to solve social problems. What is social change? Social change aims at changing a culture to solve social problems. I.e. Changing values/beliefs so that racism is erased.

Means of Social Change Source of change, method of change, etc.

1. Values and Beliefs Changing values and beliefs is one way of changing a culture (by targeting values/beliefs in the components of culture). Social Movement – A long term, conscious effort to promote/prevent social change. Ideology – System of beliefs or ideas that supports interests held by a group in society.

2. Technology The knowledge and tools people use to manipulate their environment is technology. Discovery – occurs when people recognize new uses for existing things/understand them in different ways. Invention – occurs when existing knowledge creates something that did not exist before.

Population A change in the population or demographic may cause change. Examples: An older population may change the culture’s values to more traditional values. A larger population may identify different social problems, such as poverty, transportation, schools, etc. A more diverse population may have more different social issues/values.

Diffusion The spreading of cultural traits from one society to another. Globalization is the term for the increasing interaction and sharing of cultures among different countries. Ex: The U.S. shared baseball with many other countries. Ex: Some of the French language is in our vocabulary.

The Physical Environment The physical geography may encourage/discourage cultural change. Ex: Japan didn’t become “modern” until the 1800s. It’s an island, so it did not interact often. Ex: Natural disasters can cause social change by bringing communities together.

Conquest changes government and the culture in charge. War and Conquest War cost lives, broken families, destruction, change in work force, technology, and medicine. Conquest changes government and the culture in charge. This is the most drastic form.
