Solving Systems of Equations and Inequalities Chapter 3, Sections 1 & 3
Prezi
Solving Systems Graphically… Put all equations in slope-intercept form Graph each equation Find the intersection(s) Solution is an ordered pair (x,y) On calculator – 2nd trace 5, move cursor to intersection, then press enter 3 times If you don’t see the intersection on the screen, you have to change the window!!!
Examples – Solve and classify the following systems.
Systems of Inequalities A system of linear inequalities is two or more inequalities using the same variables. To solve a system of inqualities, graph ALL inequalities on the same graph – the solution is the graph!!
Solving Systems of Inequalities… Put all inequalities in slope-intercept form Graph each inequality If the inequality is < or >, the line is dotted If the inequality is ≤ or ≥, the line is solid Shade the appropriate region If the inequality is > or ≥, shade above the line If the inequality is < or ≤, shade below the line The solution is where the shading of both graphs overlap each other If the shadings don’t overlap – the answer would be no solution
Don’t Forget…. The solution to a system of inequalities is the graph Although the calculator can graph these for you – you still need to draw the graph on graph paper to help with the next lesson.
Examples – Solve the following systems of inequalities.
Now it’s your turn… Exit Slip Homework When you graph a system of inequalities, how can the inequality symbols help you remember whether to use a dashed or solid line? Homework Page 14 (1-9) Page 16 (1-6)
