6.1 Solving one-step linear inequalities

Notes Graph of linear inequalities: one variable is set of points on a number line representing all solutions of the inequality. When dividing or multiplying by negative number, switch inequality sign. Ex: -2x < 6 -2x > 6 -2 -2

Graphing Inequalities 4 Graphing Tips: < or > open circle Ex: ≤ or ≥ closed circle Ex: at most or no more than = ≤ at least = ≥

Graphing Inequalities x < 5 m ≥ 12 z ≥ -6 h < 15

Graphing Inequalities x < 10 m ≥ 1 z ≥ -2 h < 5

Solve inequalities n + 8 > 3 x – 8 < 23 10 ≥ y + 4

Solve and Graph Inequalities x + 4 < 5 m + 8 ≥ 12 z – 15 ≥ 65 h + 19 < 15

Inequality (division) 2x > -8 -7s ≤ 14 5a < 35 5z ≥ -65

Student Examples 9a < 36 12x ≤ -60 6z < 66 -7s > -84 4m ≥ -60 -16k > 32

Inequality (multiplication)

Inequality (multiplication) B / 7 > 21 N / -3 ≥ -5 d/-11 ≤ 6 t/9 > 12 c/8 ≥ 3 u/5 < 12

Word Problem You need at least $15 more to buy a stereo. Write an inequality that describes how much money you need s. Graph the inequality.

Word problem Maria is 15 years old. Let A represent the age of Maria’s younger brother. Write and graph the inequality for A.

Word Problem During a bitter cold week in January, the temperature in Seattle Washington, did not exceed 10 degrees. Write and graph an inequality that describes the temp. T.
