Crucible Essay

Thesis A claim you are making about the text The main idea of your paper What you are arguing for is the correct interpretation of the text

Example Miller uses the characters in The Crucible, Danforth, Parris, and Mr. Putnam, to point out hypocrisy in American society.

Topic Sentences The first sentence of a body paragraph Directs the content of the rest of the paragraph Provides a transition from the previous paragraph Connects back to the thesis

Example Moreover, Salem’s minister, Reverend Parris, a man meant to set an example, is a hypocrite; he is far too concerned about money, his reputation, and himself.

Supporting Evidence Quotes are relevant to the topic sentence Provide direct support to the topic sentence Is sufficient for proving the claim in your thesis

Example For example, Parris complains in Act I, rather selfishly, that he deserves more for his work. PARRIS. Where is my wood? My contract provides I be supplied with all my firewood…I had to show my frostbitten hands like some London beggar! (Miller 29).
