PURPOSE To Entertain. Give a deeper understanding about life.

PLOT PLOT CHART Falling Action CLIMAX RISING ACTIONS EXPOSITION RESOLUTION

EXPOSITION INTRODUCES: Characters Conflict Setting

RISING ACTIONS Events that advance the plot Includes: Foreshadowing: hints about future events Flashback: memories of past events Irony: an unexpected twist at the end of a story

CLIMAX The point when the conflict is resolved It may be action packed or As simple as the answer to a question

FALLING ACTION Occurs after the climax They bring closure to a story

RESOLUTION Ties up all loose ends Explains many of the previous events. Doesn’t leave the reader hanging

CONFLICT DEFINITION: The central problem in a story TWO TYPES: 1. EXTERNAL CONFLICT Occurs outside the main character 2. INTERNAL CONFLICT Occurs inside the main character

SETTING The time and place a story occurs Historical events can influence the setting of a story. Setting is influenced by plot events.

CHARACTERS The people in a story Two types Dynamic Static Dynamic: Change at some point during the story. Static: Stays the same throughout the story

CHARACTERIZATION Characterization is the personality of the characters Characters in fictional works have personality traits . Traits are revealed through their motivations, or reasons for acting in certain ways Traits are revealed through the character’s thoughts, words, and actions. Also revealed through thoughts words and actions of other characters.

MOOD/TONE MOOD: The way a story makes the reader feel while reading a work of fiction. TONE: The author’s choice of words to express his/her beliefs on a specific subject. TYPES Sarcastic, humorous, serious, nostalgic

THEME The moral lesson or comment about life the author wants to convey to the reader COMMON THEMES INCLUDE Kindness Accepting Others’ Differences Honesty Don’t Be Afraid to Try New Things Be Happy With What You Have Working Together Friendship Responsibility Believe in Yourself Overcoming a Challenge

GENRES Historical fiction Mystery Horror Realistic Fiction Science Fiction/Fantasy Science fiction is the art of the possible Based on scientific theories Fantasy is the art of the impossible. Includes imaginary creatures and places The theme usually points out human flaws
