Students will be able to:
Meiosis Notes Cell division to form the gametes, sperm (male gamete) and egg (female gamete). Normal cells are diploid (2n): 2 copies of every gene. Gametes.
6.6 Meiosis and Genetic Variation KEY CONCEPT Independent assortment and crossing over during meiosis result in genetic diversity.
Problem: Our cells have 46 chromosomes—so why don’t fertilized eggs have 92 chromosomes?
What is mitosis? The way cells divide to produce more body cells.

GENETIC VARIATION Sources of Variation

WHY DON’T ALL OFFSPRING FROM THE SAME PARENTS LOOK IDENTICAL? Genetic variation!

SOURCES OF VARIATION 1. Crossing Over: when homologous chromosomes exchange parts of chromatids during meiosis 2. Independent Assortment: independent segregation of genes during the formation of gametes 3. Random fertilization: random chance of a specific sperm pairing with a specific egg 4. Mutations: changes in the DNA sequence

VARIATION: CROSSING OVER

VARIATION: INDEPENDENT ASSORTMENT

VARIATION: RANDOM FERTILIZATION

VARIATION: MUTATION
