Japan After WWII

Essential Question What was the role of the U.S. in rebuilding Japan after WWII?

Vocabulary Time!! Take out one sheet of paper. Fold it in half hotdog style. Create three slits for the vocabulary terms: Communism Containment Cold War

Vocabulary Communism—a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single political party. Containment—trying to stop the spread of communism.

Vocabulary 3. Cold War—a state of conflict between nations that does not involve direct military action but is pursued primarily through economic and political actions.

Background Info!! Japan surrendered in September 1945. Country was reduced to rubble. Industries and farms were destroyed. The government was in shambles. The people were demoralized (to deprive a person(s) of spirit, courage, etc. The emperor had been exposed as an ordinary mortal rather than the god the Japanese people had believed him to be. The American commander of the occupation forces was General Douglas MacArthur. He was given the job of putting Japan back on its feet, in a way that would guarantee that Japan would not pose a military threat to other countries in the future.

SG: General Douglas MacArthur was given the job of rebuilding Japan after the end of WW II. Even though he wanted Japan to have a democratic government, he also appreciated the important place the Japanese emperor occupied in the Japanese culture.

Role of the Japanese Emperor SG: The role of the Japanese emperor in the new government was mainly ceremonial after WW II.

SG: Japan became a constitutional monarchy after WW II.

Requirement? SG: The Japanese constitution includes the requirement that they must never declare war on another country.

Questions to Consider About how many ships were involved in the bombing of Pearl Harbor? The Americans knew they were about to be attacked at Pearl Harbor and did all that they could to save their lives. (T or F) What date will live in infamy? Which country dropped the first atomic bomb in warfare? How many people were killed by the atomic bomb?
