Irony and Concentration Camps Chapter 3 p 37 - 46 Night Irony and Concentration Camps Chapter 3 p 37 - 46

Post-it On your post-it note: Write one specific example from the text that reveals how Elie is changing. We will share our responses with a partner, then the class.

Elie’s Changes Categorize Elie’s changes into no more than 4 major groups.

Verbal Irony Verbal irony occurs when something is said in which the opposite is intended or something is said in which the opposite is true.

Verbal Irony Examples e.g. The unsinkable TItanic e.g. Your friend falls in the mud and you say, “Ah, lucky you.” e.g. As a plane experiences turbulence, a passenger says, “This is going to be a pleasant ride.”

Dramatic Irony Occurs when the reader or audience knows more than the characters in the story do. This is used to engage the audience and keep them actively involved in the storyline.

DRAMATIC IRONY EXAMPLES: Tim’s parents are proud of the “A” he got on the test, but readers know he cheated. Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.

Situational Irony Occurs when the opposite of what is expected happens. Examples: Bill Gates uses an Apple computer. The teacher’s daughter is a High School drop out. A fire station goes up in flames

Ironic Quotes: “Work sets you free”

Explain the IRONY of each Quote: “The inscription: WARNING! DANGER OF DEATH!” (40). “This one had an iron gate with the overhead inscription: ARBEIT MACHT FREI” (40).
