Rainforest adventures! LEARNING LINKS: What will be at explored, achieved, discussed and learned in our class this term? SCIENCE AND COMPUTING HUMANITIES (History, Geography, RE) PE AND PSHE Science - Plants and animals: How do plants grow in the rainforest? What do plants need to grow? What are the different layers of the rainforest? What animals live the rainforest? How can we group animals? What is a food chain? What is the weather like in the rainforest? Forest school: What animals and mini beasts are living in our forest area? What is their habitat like? How can we care for the environment around us? Computing: How can we use technology safely? (esafety) Can we use the internet effectively to find out new information about the rainforest? PSHE: How can we care for our world? Why is recycling important? What is deforestation and the effects? PE – Athletics: How can we throw over long/short distances with accuracy? How do we catch with control? How can we work effectively as a team? How can we improve our performance? PE: Swimming Sports day PSHE – Jigsaw: Relationships and changing me Geography: What is life like in the rainforest? Where are the rainforests? How can we care for the rainforest? What products do we get from the rainforest? History: Who are Jane Goodall and David Attenborough? What have they achieved? What can we learn from them? RE- Islam: What do Muslims believe? What special objects to they have? Supermarket mission! – spot products with the rainforest alliance or FSC symbol. Create a list. Create a poster to tell people how and why we need to recycle our rubbish. Create a list of different ways we can look after the environment e.g turn off taps properly. YEAR 1 Term 5&6 Rainforest adventures! Books: The Vanishing rainforest, Rumble in the jungle and The Rainforest grew all around etc. Garden adventure! – explore your garden or around your home. What different minibeasts can you discover? Keep an explorer’s log book. Draw and label your discoveries. ENGLISH MATHS Data collection – favourite animals! How could we collect and record information? How could we present information using a graph? Measure - Measuring and comparing animals: How do we measure using a tape measure? What units do we use? How can we make our measuring accurate? Which animal is tallest/shortest/longest? Can we order these measurements? Which animals are taller than _____? Addition and subtraction: What does add/plus/subtract/take-away/minus mean? How can we show this using symbols? How can we use drawings/objects/number lines to help us? Can we solve word problems using these skills? Non Chronological report: What questions do we want to answer? How will we gather our information/facts? How do we group information? How do we use titles/labels/captions pictures/diagrams? Rainforest story: What is a setting? What adjectives could we use? What are the key features of a story? CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT (Art, Music, Design technology) DT - Creating a rainstick: What different materials could we use? How will we join them together? How will we decorate our rainstick? Art: Who is Henri Rosseau? What is his artwork like? Music: Can we clap/drum along to the beat? What is the difference between the beat and rhythm? What sounds can we hear in the rainforest? How can we create these sounds using different instruments? Can we create our own rainforest song? Read at least three times a week to earn a gold coin for the reading rainbow! Parents, please use the reading bookmark attached to their reading record to ask your child questions to develop their comprehension. Create your own jungle picture/painting! How many different animals and plants can you draw? Create jungle prints – What animal has been sneaking through the jungle? Find out some amazing mathematical facts about some animals, rivers or tress from the rainforest? The biggest…..The longest……..The widest……..The tallest……… The smallest…. The shortest?
