Writing Workshop

Plot Diagram Create a Plot Diagram for the Story Use quotes when labeling the parts What is the Exposition? What are the Rising Action details? The Climax. What happens that moves the story? What are the Falling Action details? Resolution. How does the story end? What is the Theme (Universal Idea) or Lesson?

Natural Phenomenon In GREEN, highlight the Natural Phenomena being explained Underline all key incidents that explain the Natural Phenomena in GREEN Is Symbolism used to convey the idea? Mark the text and give me the figurative meaning—What does it represent? How descriptive is the story? Can you see the events happening and how the phenomenon is created?

Characterization Who are the characters? Direct Characterization What do they look like? What is their personality like? Does the dialogue show their characterization? Direct Characterization Indirect Characterization What others think about them? How they feel? What they think?

Language Skills In Pink, highlight the Figurative Language and Sensory details Mark in the margins what type of figurative language is being used or what sense is being described AND tell me how it enhances the writing. Examples: The rain pelted the ground so hard that large puddles began to expand and cover everything in sight. This is an example of sight sensory detail because the reader can see how hard the rain is falling as well as the ground being covered.

Language Skills Highlight the Dialogue in YELLOW Remember: Is it correctly punctuated Use the Dialogue Rules handout for assistance. Remember: When the Speaker changes, the Line changes

Using a colored pencil or pen, look for any grammatical and conventional errors Is the spelling correct? Are you using sophisticated conventions Word Choice Dashes Semi-colons Exclamation points or question marks Check pronouns and antecedents. Do they match? Use your notes Sentence Fluency: How well do your sentences flow? Read each sentence individually aloud to check for accuracy.
