Introduction to Debate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LesGw274Kjo

The Three Parts of an Opinion Claim – this is the opinion Warrant – this is the evidence Impact – this is the relevance

The Power of Listening Most people do not listen to another person, they are waiting to say what they have to say In conversation, listening is as important as speaking

What makes a good idea? In a debate, ask yourself: What is the best idea? What is the strongest idea? What is the most valid idea? What is the most interesting idea? Is the idea easy or hard to defend? Is the solution clear and simple?

The Pros and the Cons To every conversation idea, there are pro (or benefits) and there are cons (or drawbacks) Ask yourself what they are for each idea? Are there more cons than pros? Think about dogs vs. cats What are the pros and cons for owning a dog? What about a cat? Pros Cons

Cosmetic Surgery: What do you think? Is it good to have cosmetic surgery? Why? Will it truly make you happier? Why? If you don’t have surgery, can you succeed in life? Where does true beauty lie?

Mapping Out Ideas Cosmetic Surgery is Good Improves Self-Esteem ___________ __________ Better Job People look at your better You make a good impression It Is Cheap You do not need a lot of money If it is cheap, then everyone must be doing it Mapping Out Ideas

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgery Reasons What are the reasons Ayu wants cosmetic surgery? Are they different from the reasons Koreans want cosmetic surgery? Should Ayu consider herself to be beautiful the way she is or should she be free to change her appearance? Where does true beauty lie?

Cosmetic Surgery: Good or Bad? Does surgery have good effects? Can it also have bad effects? Can cosmetic surgery help people feel better about themselves or is that only a lie? Does Korea have a problem with cosmetic surgery?

Which countries have the most cosmetic surgery?

Pick a Side Get into groups and pick a side: Cosmetic Surgery has positive effects in society for an individual. Cosmetic Surgery does not have substantial effects in society for an individual.
