THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM SOAR Biology – Mr. Najera. WHAT IS THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM? Remember: A group of Organs & Glands make up a system. It Has two main functions:
CIRCULATION Once food has been digested, it must be transported to the cells for them to use. This is the function of the circulatory system.
The endocrine system is vital in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, and sexual function and reproductive processes.

Review 2 Why is heme important? Binds to the oxygen in the blood Explain why porphyria might be the source of vampire and werewolf legends. Symptoms include growing (facial and other) hair; blisters in the sun; teeth get red-purple and sharper; open wounds heal slowly; can act very aggressively Which body systems are involved in porphyria? Integumentary (skin); circulatory; endocrine (?); skeletal (teeth); immune (healing); lymphatic (wounds) What is gastrin? What does it stimulate? Hormone  gland to produce gastric acid (digestion) How is the production of gastrin an example of negative feedback? If there is enough gastrin in the stomach, then the gland (in the stomach/digestive system) stops producing it

Review 2 6) What does the hormone leptin do? Tells the hypothalamus that the body is full (not hungry) 7) How could problems with leptin production result in obesity? Leptin hormone is altered (not normal shape) Person keeps on eating even when body doesn’t need it because the brain doesn’t recognize the leptin as leptin; leptin circulates fat in the body (also psychological effects) 8) Name 3 detrimental effects of obesity. Diabetes; sleep apnea; heart attack (arteries clogged); diff breathing; decreased mobility; back and joint pain; constant sweating; psych issues; burn less calories (vicious cycle); slow metabolism 9) What can you do to increase your body’s metabolism? Eat less more often; exercise regularly; build muscle; sleep well; drink more water (reduce water weight); eat breakfast
