Inalco Presentation of the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations 2018

A rich and long history The Inalco was founded in 1669 Its purpose was to teach a wide range of languages to French people The Inalco remained loyal to its commitment: spread oriental languages knowledge Over the centuries, the Inalco has become an institution of unrivalled scope Nowadays, it offers the richest and most diverse range of languages and civilizations courses in the world The Inalco has a rich and long history. Indeed it was founded in 1669 under the reign of Louis the 14th also called "le roi soleil" and also at the origin of the well known "chateau de Versailles“ Its purpose was to teach a wide range of languages to the French. At that time languages taught were: Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Chinese, Malay, Crimean Tatar Since the 17th century the INALCO remained loyal to its commitment: spread oriental languages knowledge, useful to encourage diplomacy and trade between France and its partners Over the centuries, the INALCO has become an institution of unrivalled scope, teaching languages that span Central Europe, Africa, Asia, America and Oceania. Nowadays, the INALCO offers the richest and most diverse range of language and civilization courses in the world. More than 100 languages and civilizations are taught in here. No other institution or country offers such a diversity of courses, such opportunity to expand horizons and such wealth of knowledge, all in one place

A wide range of languages and civilizations  Professionally-focused courses  Research-focused courses Divided into 12 areas of studies: Africa and Indian ocean, South Asia Himalaya, South-East Asia and Pacific, Arabic studies, Chinese studies, Korean studies, Hebrew and Jew studies, Japanese studies, Russian studies, Eurasia, Europe, American cultures and languages And 5 vocational fields: international business, international relations, intercultural communication and training, language teaching and texts computing multilingualism From the undergraduate to the PhD level 103 languages and civilization taught, divided into professionally focused courses and research-focused courses Professionally-focused courses: which lead to career paths in international business, international relations, communication and intercultural training, language teaching and multilingual computing Research-focused courses: which are centered on a research discipline. The institute also organizes a seminar each year for the research master’s programs, taught by faculty from all disciplines and geographical areas. The doctoral school supervises and facilitates the research of more than 300 PhD students Divided into 12 areas of studies: African, South Asian, South-East Asian, American, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian, Eurasian, and European studies + international business, international relations, communication, language teaching and multicultural computing From the undergraduate to the doctorate level Bachelor degrees: courses by language and region that can include a professional specialization Master’s degree: regional programs targeting a research discipline or professional direction Doctorate: Phd research at INALCO’s doctorate school

A unique international influence 200 teaching and research agreements in over 100 countries: INALCO students and students from our international partners can take advantage of an immersion experience to complement their studies The Inalco helps fund discovery trips with specific grants The Inalco offers distance courses via videoconferencing and online access to teaching and learning material: Inuktitut (Inuit language), Estonian (European language) and Swahili (African language)
