Oral Interpretation Performing of literature aloud to communicate meaning to an audience Requires analyzation of mood, meaning, and intent of the piece Requires connection to the literature and the audience Requires communication of mood, meaning, and intent though the voice and gestures, both facial and bodily.

Checklist for Selecting Material for Oral Interpretation Does it connect with the common human experience? Is it appropriate to the audience and the occasion? Will listeners be able to grasp the meaning in one reading? Do you feel personally connected to the material?

Characteristics of Oral Interpretation Memorize and perform the author’s piece You create a mood or tone that is interpretive of the piece Help audience “see” the message as you interpret it Gestures Facial features Pauses Body movements

Cutting it down from a Longer Piece If the piece is part of a larger piece of literature such as a novel or a play: You need to first read the entire piece of literature. Understand the larger piece to understand hou wyour section/cutting fits into the whole See Chapter 17 of the textbook for ”Cutting the Text”

Understanding the Elements of the Literary Piece Setting—this will create your tone Plot—Sometimes, if you cut parts out, you will need to tell your audience the plot in the introduction Mood—the emotional feeling of the piece through non-verbal messages. Theme—the main idea of the piece helps you emphasize important parts that point to the theme in your piece Conflict—what is the problem Character—how do these characters act?

Word Emphasis Connotative meaning is the emotional or personal response a word evokes by emphasis Similar to reading a children’s book to a child to emphasize with the tone and inflection of your voice the important words that connect to the meaning.

Reading Rhythm and Rhyme You must not read in a singsong voice or rhythm Listeners will tune you out Boring/sleepy Break the rhythm so audience will pay more attention.

How to Basics. Re-read or reference pages 513-547 of the text.
