We’re Going To be Friends Building and Maintaining Relationships

Relationship A relationship involves social associations, connections or affiliations between two or more people. Such persons may interact overtly, covertly, face-to-face; or may remain effectively unknown to each other.

Actions and Skills to build and Maintain Relationships Communicating Well – verbal and nonverbal communication Actively Listening – give feedback and listen when others are speaking Avoid Gossip and Put-Downs Give Credit and Show Appreciation – acknowledge the effort and achievements of others Offering Help

Actions and skills to maintain and build relationships Sharing Appropriate Jokes – jokes are fun and not said to offend others Showing Genuine Interest – liking the person as that person Having Respect – showing consideration for others Being Trustworthy and Dependable Having Empathy – understanding the other person’s feelings Having a Positive Attitude

Types of Relationships Professional Social Personal Associated with people who are professionals such as doctors, lawyers and dentists. Related to people who are kept at a distance and you would normally just acknowledge like the bus driver or mail man. People that have a close relationship with such as your parents and friends.
