The Headline The purpose of any newspaper article title is to grab the readers’ attention and briefly hint at the contents of the article. Titles of articles should use words that entice the readers’ emotions Your headline should be short and specific

Lead/First Paragraph The first paragraph of your article should include the most important information and continue to interest the reader. The lead must answers the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

Body of the Article The purpose of the body paragraphs is to explain the lead in greater detail. Expand on each of the questions: who, what, where, when, why and how. Provide information from primary resources, statistics, interviews with experts and/or bystanders. Structure this section by putting the most important details first and the least important at the end of the article.

The Inverted Triangle The “inverted triangle” means that if you were a journalists, your editor can easily cut the story if it won’t fit on the page, by deleting less important details at the end.

Your Assignment: Write your own News Article You are a newspaper journalist writing for the New York Times. You have been called to report on the suspicious death of a New York City police officer named Patrick Maloney. Your job is to write a newspaper article describing the murder scene. Guidelines: You must include: a headline, lead, date, who, what, where, when, why and how. A photograph with caption. You must include an interview with Mary Moloney and/or one of the police officers on the scene. Your article must follow the “inverted pyramid structure”. Your writing must be typed and double spaced. If possible, make your article “look” like a real newspaper. With your good copy, an outline and at least one rough draft must be submitted.
