Keys to Caregiving

What are children’s needs? Physical Emotional Guidance

Physical Needs Keep children SAFE. Keep children fed (proper nutrition). Protect children from the elements (earth, rain, wind, fire).

Physical Needs Provide adequate rest. Keep children clean.

Emotional Needs Give love and attention. Provide praise and assurance.

Emotional Needs Keep calm. Build self-esteem. Avoid fearful situations.

Tell what you want them to do. Guidance Needs Wait for your sister. Use directive statements. Provide learning activities. Provide a learning environment. Be Positive Tell what you want them to do.

Guidance Needs Use discipline prevention methods. Discipline with love.

Discipline Techniques Use a time out period. Divert their attention. Start a new physical activity. Hold the child’s hand or shoulder.

Discipline Techniques Teach desired behavior. Ignore misbehavior if possible. Reward and recognize good behavior. The best rewards are natural—and you don't have to provide them though noticing them is wonderful (positive reinforcement). A child who works hard in his swimming class is rewarded by increased skills, bigger muscles, the great feeling of improvement and ability, and, eventually, permission to swim on his own. For a child, the sense of “I can do it!” is the best reward in the world. http://life.familyeducation.com/parenting/discipline/45284.html#ixzz2QCAeTCpS

Child Abuse Often confused with discipline. Must not be an outlet for your own anger. Take a time out for yourself.

Report it. Call 911, if child in danger now. Or 801-544-1298, Division of Child & Family Services Or 1-800-422-4453, Child Abuse Hotline
