The Sport Education Model Crated by Daryl Siedentop Places responsibilities on the students to lead activities and games Authentic and euthusiastic sport experience Culturally relevant and inclusive experience Unity and relatedness

Elements of the SEM Seasons Affiliation Culminating Event Formal Competition Record Keeping Festivity

Previous Studies Dana Perlman Dana Perlman and Grace Karp Tristan Wallhead and Nikos Ntounmanis Daryl Siedentop Gary Kinchin

Research Shows Research in these studies supports the benefits identified by Darly Siedentop’s theory of the SEM Shows self-confidence can improve Motivation Relatedness

Gaps in Research Sportspersonship Younger age students 4th and 5th grade

Study at Pattie Elementary School I propose that by incorporating certain aspects of the SEM into the 5th grade classes it will have a positive effect on students pro social behaviors All 5th grade classes are coed and have very diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds 6 week unit a total of 12 classes 2 sports team handball and basketball

Elements of SEM in my study Affiliation- teams and roles Record Keeping- points, wins, loses, and fair play points Festivity- team names, posters, colors, and cheers Culminating Event- awards ceremony

Fair Play Points Identify positive social behaviors Post on the wall Continue to review these behaviors with through students through out the study Announce when giving points

Assesment Video tape four lessons Use two different coding instruments Student based- record number of identified pro social behaviors shown by students Teacher based- record frequency of elements of the SEM that are being taught or re-taught

Results? Can show the affects the SEM has on the amount of pro-social behaviors shown in a PE class Can also show which specific elements are being emphasized and their relation to pro social behaviors
