AP Language Exemplification and Juxtaposition

Agenda Bell ringer (rhetorical devices) Notes on exemplification and juxtaposition Practice with exemplification/juxtaposition I can analyze how an author uses exemplification and juxtaposition to make an argument.

Bell Ringer Complete the rhetorical device bell ringer

Rhetorical Modes: Exemplification Exemplification is a rhetorical mode in which the author illustrates an abstract idea by providing an extended example (or several examples) of that idea. Sometimes authors will use individual characters to exemplify arguments/ideas/themes in their works. Entire books can serve as an exemplification of a major abstract idea.

Rhetorical Modes: Exemplification Listen to this song and read the lyrics. What is the main argument(s)? How does the songwriter use exemplification to support the argument? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nXI6r6aCoU

Rhetorical Modes: Compare/Contrast Compare/Contrast is a rhetorical mode in which the similarities and differences between two or more ideas is explored to present an argument. Juxtaposition: placing two ideas, events, characters, images, etc next to each other in order to highlight the differences between them.

Juxtaposition:

Exemplification in BNW: We will now look at how Huxley uses exemplification in his presentation of characters in the novel. Think about the major ideas being presented in the novel and which characters might serve to exemplify those ideas.
