Civil War Begins Unit Questions What did each side expect and plan for during the early stages of the Civil War? What were the battles early in the conflict like? How did Lincoln manage the complexities of the war? What complications did each side face at home?

Comparing Economies: North and South You will look at two charts which compare the economies of the North and South during the Civil War. For each item on the chart you should answer… Which side has the advantage in this category? Why might this advantage help in winning the Civil War? After you are finished, you will create a Thesis Statement… (more on this in a moment)

Thesis Statement is Not… Question: Did the North really have the better economy in the Civil War? Statement of Purpose: In this essay I will discuss the economic differences of the Civil War? Topic: The Economies of the North and South

Strong Thesis Statements… Take a Stand: Yes: The South had a better economy than the North during the Civil War. No: The North and South had economies during the Civil War.

Strong Thesis Statements… Justify a Discussion: Yes: The Civil War was a hard-fought war because it was the bloodiest in U.S. History. No: The Civil War was hard-fought because people died.

Strong Thesis Statements… Are Specific: Yes: The Confederate Strategy could only work in a quick war. No: Various things that the Confederate generals did to fight the Civil War had different effects as the Civil War turned into a lengthy war.

Strong Thesis Statements… Express one Main Idea: Yes: The North crushed the South with the Anaconda Plan. No: The North crushed the South with the Anaconda Plan, but the South held out for a while with the Confederate Strategy.
