Bell Work: Answer the following question with your group Bell Work: Answer the following question with your group. Be ready to discuss in class! 1. What is the responsibility of the media (news casts, newspapers, magazines, websites, etc...)in our society? 2. What should the audience of the media take into consideration when learning new information?

The Peter Zenger Trial: Freedom of the Press The definition: What do you think the word means? The act of publishing a false statement that causes people to have a bad opinion about someone. LIBEL Related Words: SketchNote a Visual

Fast Facts: The Peter Zenger Trial Who was involved: German Immigrant, Peter Zenger, printed for a publication called THE NEW YORK WEEKLY JOURNAL. What happened: The JOURNAL printed actions about the corrupt governor of New York, William S. Crosby. Zenger was accused of LIBEL and was tried in court. Where: New York When: 1733 Why was there a trial? Zenger was accused of printing, not writing, the information about the governor: rigging elections, allowing the French to explore New York harbor, and labeling him an idiot. Thus, showing opposition to the government at the time. How did the court rule? Zenger never denied printing the information... Guilty or Innocent??? **Participate in the gallery walk to find out the VERDICT*** Please note: Libel at this time meant— when you published information that opposed a government. It did not matter if the information was true or false.

With your group discuss the following question: Which side do you believe won the court case? Peter Zenger? Governor Crosby? How did you arrive at that conclusion?
