Science Data Use in Math Class Jessica Lizarraga Seventh Grade Math Teacher Davidson Middle School
Analyzing and Interpreting Data Science data gives this a real life application, math is not only in the textbooks! It enhances their critical thinking skills and allows them to become better problem solvers It is everywhere in the math curriculum!
My Teaching Practice What did you try? Personal interest surveys and based conclusions off of it Rainfall data Knee deep in green peppers Candy bowl predation activity Planning more projects that look at real situations that they can relate to math Making opportunities for learning conversations to discuss data and graphs
Candy Bowl Predation Worldly Percentages
Rainfall Totals in Marin Through the different activities that I did with my students, the main emphasis is on how to make math relatable. The candy was a great way to make conclusions and talk about natural selection. The globe activity was an active way to record data and calculate percentages. Lastly, the rainfall total was a way to summarize and calculate live action data.
What Worked Structured statements to help with their construction of their conclusion Being able to correlation between numeric data and visual representations Seated in groups students take turn facilitating discussions
Problems still left to solve How to facilitate a discussion about data in math class? How to write informative conclusions based on the data Examples of evidence, these can be videos, pictures of student work, student quotes from doing student interviews, etc.
Take-Aways from iTEAMS Professional development opportunities allowed me to experience science content with a mathematical skill iTEAMS has aloud me to collaborate with colleagues I don’t normally get a chance to work with Tons of ideas and lesson plans Time is the issue for implementations and so is consistency with staff
