King James I granted land charter to English settlers to go to the New World and start The Virginia Company. The settlers were given all the rights of Englishmen. Charter = Contract The Virginia Charter

1607

We’re here, now what?

The Beginning The men built a fort and started digging for gold. Some looked for a passage to the Pacific Ocean, thinking China was much closer than it was in reality But they forgot one important detail… No one planted anything to eat! The Beginning

John Smith takes over and states, “Those who don’t work don’t eat.” Draw this on the L side! John Smith takes over and states, “Those who don’t work don’t eat.”

John Rolfe, with help from the NA, discovers a new way to grow tobacco. Tobacco is grown, dried and sent to England where is sells $$ The colony is successful & tobacco saves the day! Tobacco Saves the Day

Economic system in which all profits go home for the good of the “mother country” Mercantilism

Up & Running With the colony now making money, it begins to expand. 1619- first slaves and women arrive in Jamestown. Up & Running

Headwright system- private ownership of land. Each settler receives 50- 100 acres of free land.

Free land and success of tobacco encouraged settlers to develop large estates called plantations. And who’s doing all the work on the plantations > African Slaves.

With all these new people, a better way to run things is needed: Virginia House of Burgesses- first representative government in the New World.

Jamestown, found in _____, is important because _____________________________________. Summary
