The brain

Parts of the Brain The brain is largely not understood! There are many regions of the brain that we don’t know what they do

Brain Stem Breathing Digestion Circulation Heart beat

Cerebellum Walnut sized lobe Controls movement, balance, coordination

Cerebrum This is the largest part. It is divided into four lobes Frontal- reasoning and thinking, motor skills Parietal- processing tactile sensory information such as pressure, touch, and pain Temporal lobe- interpreting sounds and the language we hear, memory formation Occipital lobe- interpreting visual stimuli and information

HypoThalamus Temperature control Thirst and hunger

Amygdala Emotion, especially fear The fight or flight response

Sight Humans heavily rely on sight as our primary sense The occipital lobe is responsible for interpreting what we see Sometimes our eyes deceive us though because… Our brain interprets the signal weirdly We have trained ourselves to look at things a certain way Or both! http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/other-shows/videos/human-body-sight- optical-illusions.htm

Sight Activities Try each activity and try to explain what is going on Decide if its your brain, your learning or both that make this image an optical trick!

Mind illusions http://www.pbs.org/wnet/brain/illusions/index.html

What area of the brain is responsible for interpreting vision? Sight

Sight http://www.teachersdomain.org/asset/tdc02_vid_vision/ How important do you think the sense of vision is compared to the other senses?

Sight

sight

Color and light Color is detected by cones. We have three kinds: red, blue and green. Light is detected by rods Both are found on the back of your eye on the retina

blindness Blindness can be caused because a part of your eye does not work, or it does not communicate with the brain http://www.wimp.com/blindsight/
