MATTER AND MASS Everything in the universe is made up (composed) of matter. Matter is anything that has mass and volume. All matter can be identified by using its properties.

Physical Properties are characteristics or features that describe a piece of matter. For example, the properties of an apple are _round, red, acidic (tart), smooth, sweet, sweet-smelling, earthy smelling, _______________________________ By using your senses (sight, smell (scent), touch (texture), taste, and hearing (sound), you can identify any matter’s properties.

Measurable properties—some properties can be measured Measurable properties—some properties can be measured. Such properties are length, mass, weight, volume, and density

MASS Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Mass is measured in grams. It’s measured using a triple beam balance.

How to use a triple beam balance 1. Always “zero”(calibrate) the balance before using. To do this, place all the riders to the left and turn the calibration knob until the pointer is at zero. 2. Place matter on pan. 3. Estimate mass and move appropriate riders until the pointer is at zero. 4. Remove matter, clean pan and place riders to left.

How to calculate mass ________________ the amount of mass (in grams) from each rider together. For example, if the lowest beam reads 6.5 g, the middle beam reads 200 g, and the back beam reads 70 g, then 6.5 + 70 + 200 = ___________g.
