Territorial Acknowledgement We would like to acknowledge that this PD session is taking place on the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta. Explanation: The Calgary Catholic School District acknowledges the need to support First Nation, Metis, and Inuit students, and supports the recommendations made by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. As such, it is our mandate to provide education about the history and legacy of residential schools, along with the history of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples of Canada. Ongoing and consistent reference to Treaty 7 acknowledges the importance of our First Nation, Metis and Inuit students, and our role as a district to support their history, culture and success as students.

Questions to think about: How can we ask students questions so that everyone gets a chance to answer? How can we remove barriers so students feel safe to participate? How can we facilitate learning rather than disseminate information? How can we give students incremental progress feedback?

Defining Formative Assessment According to TQS “Evidence of student learning to inform teaching practice through a balance of formative and summative assessment experiences” “Provide accurate, constructive and timely feedback on student learning; and using appropriate universal and targeted strategies and supports to address students’ strengths, learning challenges and areas for growth;” Formative assessment is not formative until you have actually used the results to modify teaching to meet students needs. OLD TQS: “Teachers understand the fluidity of teaching and learning. They constantly monitor the effectiveness and appropriateness of their practices and students’ activities, and change them as needed.” “They record, interpret and use the results of their assessments to modify their teaching practices and students’ learning activities.”
