Vocabulary and Abbreviations Physical change: a change in the state, phase, or appearance of a material without forming new materials. Chemical change: also called a chemical reaction; the process of substances being chemically changed into other substances through the reorganization of atoms. Reactant: the starting materials in a chemical reaction that are transformed into products during chemical reactions. Product: the substances formed from reactants as a result of a chemical reaction. Precipitate: an insoluble substance formed during a chemical change.

Physical Properties Changes used to describe how something is: Color Shape Size Density Melting/Boiling Point Odor matter changes form but not composition (i.e. ice is still H2o) Phase change Shape change Size change Dissolving No color change (except dye)
