802.11ad History WiGig alliance promotes the IEEE 802.11ad Announced in May 2009 WiGig announced the release of its certification ready version 1.1 specs in June 2011 WiGig & Wi-Fi Alliance merged in March 2013 Wi-Fi Alliance announced the launch of its WiGig certification program in Oct 2016

802.11ad Very High Throughput (VHT) main specs 802.11ad Operates at 60 GHz frequency Use up to four 2.16 GHz channels. Over 8 GHz of Bandwidth Each channel supports up to 6.75675 Gbps (using OFDM) In Lower complexity single channel (SC) up to 2.224 Gbps Range 1-10 meters Support up to 32 antennas (for phase beamforming)

802.11ay Project Goals Task Group ay is expected to develop an amendment that defines standardized modifications to both the IEEE 802.11 physical layers (PHY) and the IEEE 802,11 medium access control layer (MAC) that enables at least one mode of operation capable of supporting a maximum throughput of at least 20 gigabits per second (measured at the MAC data service access point), while maintaining or improving the power efficiency per station. This amendment also defines operations for license-exempt bands above 45 GHz while ensuring backward compatibility and coexistence with legacy directional multi-gigabit stations (defined by IEEE 802.11ad-2012 amendment) operating in the same band.
