Biology 12-7-15 Review for EOC

Bell ringer What is genetic drift?

Answer Genetic Drift is a variation in how often you see certain phenotypes within a small population, and may include the chance of the disappearance of particular genes as individuals die or do not reproduce. (This is accidental, and not related to whether certain characteristics are more suited to a region. Remember Ginger?)

Evolution Review You will get into groups of 3 or 4. As a group you will have a scribe. Your group will answer each of the questions. The group with the most correct answers at the end will receive extra credit on their test tomorrow.

#1 The wings of a butterfly and the wings of a bird have the same function (flying), but they have a different structure. This type of structure is ___ Homologous. Analogous. Vestigial. Fossils.

#2 The definition of evolution is ___ A.The process of change over time in populations. B.The process of change in individual organisms. C.The process in which organisms share habitats. D.The process by which organisms do reproduce.

#3 Natural selection is “survival of the fittest”. This means that if a population of organisms does not adapt to its environment, it will eventually____ A. Become the dominant species. B. Increase the gene pool. C. Become extinct. D. None of the above.

Feed Milk to their babies #4 Pig Lizzard Eagle Chicken Cat Warm Blooded Yes No yes Have hair or fur no Feed Milk to their babies May eat mice From the above table which type of animal ismost closely related to the pig? A.The lizard. B.The eagle. C.The chicken. D.The cat.

#5 You have to design an experiment for your science class and you decide to find out how many students in your class prefer to eat fast food vs. home cooked food. You conduct a survey to find out.Out of 30 students, 8 prefer home cooked food and 22 prefer fast food. What is the independent variable of this experiment? A.Fast food only. B.Home cooked food only. C.Both fast food and home cooked food. D.The total number of students.

#6 What is the anatomical difference between amodern horse and its ancestor? A.The horse’s ancestor had four toes. B.The modern horse has only one toe. C.The number of toes is still the same. D.Both a and b.

#7 Which type of evolution occurs at a slow rate? A.Punctuated evolution. B.Mutated evolution. C.Gradual evolution. D.analogous evolution.

#8 The study of embryology and seeing how the embryos depicted in the picture above are similar in the first stages is proof that _____ A.They have a common ancestor. B.They contain the same DNA. C.They contain the same proteins. D.They are all mammals.

#9 When ants feed too heavily on acacia plants, the plants produce a toxin. Natural selection would favor ants that— Aeat only acacia plants. Bfeed on a variety of different plants Ceat many different leaves on the same plant. Dremain on the same plant for their entire life cycle
