How many sciences do I need to graduate? You only need one approved grade 11 or 12 science to graduate, but you can take as many science courses as you wish! If you are considering post-secondary, you need to check with the schools/programs you are interested in, as many faculties/programs require more than one science course.

To find course planning information: Go to  wgss.ca  student life  course guide and forms  grade 9-12 course planning

What are advanced placement courses? Advanced Placement course curriculum is written by the AP College Board in the US and reflects the typical first year university topics in that subject area. Why would a student want to take an advanced placement course? You really enjoy the subject matter and want to learn beyond high school level You want to take an accelerated course with like minded students You want to experience great class discussions and lab experiences beyond high school level You want to get credit for a first year university course while still in high school (requires a 4 or 5 on the AP College Board Exam for that subject)

Life Sciences 11 (Biology 11) Survey course of all life forms Study: Cells, DNA, evolution, classification of the living world, microbiology, ecology, plant biology and animal biology.

Anatomy and Physiology 12 (Biology 12) Prerequisite: Life Sciences 11 or Chemistry 11 Intensive survey of the human anatomy and how all the parts work together to keep you alive! Study: Biochemistry, Cells, DNA, Enzymes, six body systems (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, excretory and reproductive).

Pre-Ap life sciences 11 (pre-AP Biology 11) Recommended: a B in Science 10 or Science 9/10 Honours with excellent work ethic Year 1 of a two year advanced placement program covering Life Sciences 11, Anatomy and Physiology 12, and a first year university Biology course (yes, you get credit for three science courses). This is an accelerated course – students must be prepared to keep up with the course and take responsibility for their learning. Study: Ecology, Biochemistry, Cells, Enzymes, Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration and DNA.

Ap Biology 12 Prerequisite: Pre-AP Life Sciences 11 (Pre-AP Biology 11) Year 2 of a two year program. You may choose to write the AP College Exam in May of the second year. If you do well on the exam (a 4 or 5), you may present the score to the university and ask to be given credit for the equivalent first year course. Study: genetics, evolution, biodiversity (all living things), comparative vertebrate anatomy and physiology (7 body systems) and biotechnology.

Chemistry 11 Recommended FOM 11 or Pre-Calculus 11 be taken at same time. Study: Measurement, atoms, ions, molecules, molarity, chemical reactions (balancing and stoichiometry), atomic theory, solutions, and organic chemistry.

Chemistry 12 Prerequisite: Chemistry 11 Recommended: FOM 12 or Pre-Calculus 12 be taken at same time Study: reaction kinetics, chemical equilibrium, solubility equilibrium, acids, bases and salts, and oxidation-reduction.

Pre-AP chemistry 11 Recommended: a B in Science 10 or Science 9/10 Honours with an excellent work ethic Recommended: FOM 11 or Pre-Calculus 11 taken at the same time Year 1 of a two year advanced placement program covering Chemistry 11, Chemistry 12, and a first year university Chemistry course (yes you get credit for all three courses) This is an accelerated course – students must be prepared to keep up with the course and take responsibility for their learning. Study: all of Chemistry 11 (atoms, molecules, ions, molarity, balancing, stoichiometry, atomic theory, solutions and organic chemistry, plus two additional units (gas laws)

Ap Chemistry 12 Recommended: FOM 12 or Pre-Calculus 12 taken at same time Year 2 of the two year advanced placement program. You may choose to write the AP College Exam in May of the second year. If you do well on the exam (a 4 or 5), you may present the score to the university and ask to be given credit for the equivalent first year course. Study: all of Chemistry 12 (reaction kinetics, chemical equilibrium, solubility equilibrium, acids, bases and salts, oxidation-reduction, plus additional university level units.

Physics 11 Prerequisite: Foundations of Math and Pre-Calculus 10 Study: fundamentals of mechanics (motion, forces and energy), applications of energy to electrical circuits, wave behaviours (doppler effect, diffraction, and interference), Optics, and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

Physics 12 Prerequisite: FOM 11 or Pre-Calculus 11 and Physics 11 Study: topics in vector mechanics, (kinematics, dynamics, conservation laws, circular motion, and gravitation). Students can also choose topics from electrostatics, equilibrium, cosmology, advanced electric circuits, rotational motion, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.

AP Physics 1 Prerequisite: completed FOM 11 or Pre-Calculus 11 with high standing This is an intensive advanced placement course. This is a one year AP course covering all of Physics 11 and many first year university physics topics. Students may write the AP College Board Exam for this course in May and present the results (a 4 or 5) to a university for possible credit of a first year physics course. Students will receive credit for both Physics 11 and AP Physics 1. Study: Vector Mechanics (kinematics, dynamics, conservation laws, rotational motion, and circular motion), electricity and wave behavior.

AP Physics 2 Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus 11 and AP Physics 1, or Physics 12 This is an intensive advanced placement course. This is a one year AP course (following AP Physics 1) covering all of Physics 12 and many first year university physics topics. Students may write the AP College Board Exam in May and present the results (a 4 or 5) to a university for possible credit of a first year physics course. Students will receive credit for both Physics 12 and AP Physics 2. Study: thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, optics, nuclear physics and quantum mechanics.

Astronomy 12 Course is designed to be an introduction to some of the current and emerging aspects of space and space exploration. Study: star mapping, celestial sphere, space race and current exploration of the solar system, historical study of early astronomers, life cycles of stars, theories of the origin of the universe, and a study of Mars and the possibility of terraforming its surface and the latest research and theories related to life in the universe. Note: if you have taken Astronomy 11, you may not take Astronomy 12.

Science for citizens 11 The science of everyday life and the world around us. Study: forensic science, extreme weather events, personal technology, fake news, nutrition and medical advances and energy and sustainability.

Environmental science 12 Course allows students to think critically about environmental issues and possible solutions. Study: safety of our water sources, global warming and its effect on extreme weather, and possible alternate energy sources are just a few of the topics studied.

What about AP capstone????? AP Capstone can be taken by anyone is grade 11 or 12 who is taking any AP subject course AP Capstone Presentation – Flex on Friday Feb 8 – room 149 AP Seminar taken in grade 11 – teaches students how to research properly and credibly at a university level. Students practice using their research, writing and presentation skills during group and individual presentations. AP Research taken in grade 12 – continues to build on AP Seminar, now you learn to write and research as a credible author as you embark on an undergrad level university research paper of your choice which includes collecting and analyzing data to add to the current body of knowledge. If students score a 3 in both AP Seminar and AP Research, they receive the AP Capstone Certificate. If students score a 3 in both AP Seminar and AP Research, and 4 additional AP courses, they receive the AP Capstone Diploma.
