Algebra Concepts Section 4.2 Exponents

Exponent-a number that tells you how many times to multiply a number (the base) by itself. Base-the number multiplied by itself the number of times determined by the exponent Power-has two parts- the base and the exponent

“Five to the second power.”

− 5 3 =−5×5×5=−125 −5 3 =−5×−5×−5=−125 The first is the opposite of 5 to the third power. The second is negative five to the third power. These will result in different answers when the exponent is an even number.

− 5 2 =−5×5=−25 (−5) 2 =−5×−5=25 When you use a calculator, make sure to use parentheses if they are in the expression

Try these! #1 𝑆𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑦 (−2) 2 #2 𝑆𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑦 − 5 2 #3 𝑊𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 4×4×4 #4 𝑊𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑒 𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦𝑦𝑦 #5 𝐸𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑎𝑡𝑒 𝑥 2 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑥=6
