Urban Drawing Activity Instructions Industrial Revolution Unit 3

INSTRUCTIONS STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A LARGE PIECE OF PAPER TO USE FOR ACTIVITY EVERY STUDENT WILL NEED A PENCIL ERASER RULER (IF POSSIBLE) DRAW A KEY AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAPER AND BE SURE TO INCLUDE A COMPASS ROSE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE POWERPONT FOR EACH ROUND AND DRAW WHAT IT STATES WHILE THE TEACHER READS THE BACKSTORY ALOUD

DRAW A KEY & COMPAS ON YOUR MAP

ROUND 1 draw a river across your paper connecting east to west the river should be about 1 inch wide draw a simple wooden bridge crossing the river draw 2 roads one running north to south and crossing the river at the bridge and one running from east to west neither road need be a straight line draw 10 houses draw 1 church draw 1 cemetery draw 1 store draw 1 pub draw 1 coal mine all the above should be close to the houses draw at least 50 trees trees should be ½ the size of a house

ROUND 2 Draw 1 nice (luxury) home anywhere on the map Draw a canal near the home It must run parallel to the river.

ROUND 3 draw 5 more houses total of 16

ROUND 4 Fence off an area around 3x3 inches to be reserved as a common green Should be sort of close to the houses Add 5 houses Total of 21 draw1 more nice (luxury) house

ROUND 5 draw 1 factory no smoke stacks because it is powered by water Draw a cotton factory It must be placed on the river bank because the canal is not swift enough to power the factory draw 5 houses for workers total of 27

ROUND 6 draw 15 houses near the factory Draw 1 church Draw 1 pub Total of 42 Draw 1  church Draw 1  pub Draw 1  store.  Draw additional roads draw 1 additional bridge

ROUND 7 draw 5 new factories draw 5 houses near the factory must be on the river bank as they need water power  draw 5 houses near the factory total of 47

ROUND 8 draw 5 Tenements (aka apartment buildings) near a factory

ROUND 9 Draw 1 store Draw 1 pub Draw 1 church Near the factory Draw 1 school for those families wealthy enough to send their children (boys) to school

ROUND 10 draw 5 more pubs Destroy (erase) 5 houses Place near a factory  Destroy (erase) 5 houses total of 42 Draw 4 tenements (aka apartment buildings)

ROUND 11 draw 2 mansions Draw 1 factory Draw 15 houses for management personages total of 59 Note: from this point on trees may be removed if you need extra space

ROUND 12 draw 10 factories with smoke stacks  draw smoke stacks to all other pre-existing factories draw one nicer house (mansion) since people continue to get rich.  draw 5 houses Total of 65 Draw 1 tenement (aka apartment building) near a factory

ROUND 13 Draw 1 new coal mine draw an iron bridge to replace the old wooden one Draw 5 houses total of 70  

ROUND 14 Draw another coal mine Draw 1 cemetery

ROUND 15 Draw 1 major railroad line connecting all of your factories to your coal mines NOTE: this is one continuous track which must connect all factories and mines you may build additional railroad bridges only as needed Reminder: you have 3 coalmines and 17 factories to connect draw 5 houses for the railroad builders Homes should be near the railroad Total of 75 houses

ROUND 16 draw 1 jail Draw 2 pubs Draw 2 tenements (aka apartment buildings)

ROUND 17 Draw 20 street lamps these are streetlamps and must be located along streets make them the size as the trees

ROUDN 18 Draw 2 hospitals Draw 1 more cemetery

ROUND 19 Draw 1 more railroad line passing east to west through your town draw 5 houses total of 80 Draw 1 tenement (aka apartment building) for the new railroad workers Must be near the railroad

ROUND 20 Draw 1 theater Draw 1 museum. draw 2 private schools for upper class students mark these schools with the letter “P” Add 1 nice (luxury) house Total of 81

ROUND 21 Draw 1 cemetery Draw 1 jail Draw 1 hospital to accommodate the victims of urban life 

ROUND 22 draw 20 houses Draw 5 tenements (aka apartment buildings) draw 2 stores Draw 1 church Draw 5 factories Draw 1 pub Draw 2 more nice (luxury) houses Draw one mansion Total of 104 total houses- 95 “regular” & 9 luxury / mansion homes
