Anatomy of elbow joint Fig :

Ligaments of elbow joint : Fig : lateral view

Nerve and arteries around elbow joint Fig :

Olecranon fracture. NOTE Triceps inserted to olecranon. Fracture leads to loss of extension.

Mechanism of injury. Fall on the point of the elbow. Fall on outstretched hand + contraction of triceps.

Cont.. Fig : lateral view

Mayo classification for olecranon fracture fig

Clinical features : Pain Swelling Inability to extend the elbow Radiology : X - ray AP and lateral views

Management. Non operative for non displaced fractures. Immobilization in a long arm cast 3 weeks . F/U with radiograph. Operative. Articular instability. (Screw and K wire).

Showing tension band wiring (TBW) in fracture olecranon Fig :open reduction and internal fixation with figure of 8 wire loop:

Complications. Non union 5% Elbow stiffness Osteoarthritis Restricted movements of the elbow.
