Kinetic and Potential Energy

What is energy? Energy causes things to happen. During the day, the sun gives off light and heat energy. At night, street lamps convert electrical energy to light. As a car drives by you it converts chemical energy stored in gasoline into kinetic energy. Our bodies convert the chemical energy in food into kinetic energy we need to move!

What is energy? Ability to do work or cause change. There are two types of energy Potential and Kinetic

Kinetic energy Energy of motion

What you need to know about kinetic energy Kinetic energy is related to mass and speed Greater mass greater the kinetic energy

Potential Energy that is stored due to an objects position/shape or height

Examples of Potential Energy When you stretch a rubber band your action gives it potential to snap back and do work.

Examples of Potential energy

What you need to know about potential energy Gravitational potential energy is energy stored in an object because of its height. The higher the object greater the potential energy More mass an object has greater the P.E.  Potential energy can also change forms.

Potential energy and kinetic energy can change forms As you lift a ball it is gaining energy. At its highest point it has the greatest potential energy. As it drops what happens to its energy?

Energy can change forms potential and kinetic
