The Importance of Genetics Genetics is the study of the laws and processes of biological inheritance from the parents of an offspring You can track the transfer of traits from parents to young You can even go back many generations of recorded breeding This is why purebred animals have documented pedigrees to validate Heredity is the passing of traits from parents to offspring

The Importance of Genetics Chromosome is a threadlike structure containing the genetic material The genetic material in a chromosome is called the Genome of an animal Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) is a protein-like nucleic acid on genes that controls inheritance Genetic Code is a sequence of nitrogen bases

Genotype and Phenotype The genetic code of an animal is predetermined by the genetics of its parents Determines how the animal grows, lives and possibly even dies The genetic code of an animal is called its Genotype This is not influenced by its environment The physical appearance of an animal is called its Phenotype This can be influenced by its environment

Homozygous & Heterozygous The alleles (or genes) for a trait may or may not match Homozygous animals would pass only one side of a trait Pass on only one side of a trait Horns or no horns AA or aa Heterozygous animals have different alleles for a trait May or may not pass on a trait Aa
