Cartographer A person who makes maps
Physical Relating to the surface of the earth- the landforms, glaciers, rivers, oceans etc…
Political The way the earth is marked up into countries by man made boundaries.
Thematic Map A map that shows a particular theme, or topic, such as population or economy of an area.

Compass Rose A tool on a map showing cardinal (N, S, E, W) and intermediate (NE, NW, SE, SW) directions.
Cardinal Directions Four main parts of a compass rose: NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST
Intermediate Directions The points of a compass rose that fall between the four cardinal points (e.g. Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest)
Key/Legend An explanation of the symbols used on a map
Scale The relationship between the distance on a map and the actual distance on Earth’s surface
Elevation The height of land above sea level
