Sustainable tourism in Iceland

The biggest attraction in Iceland is how raw and untouched the nature is.

That is both good and bad. The good: Raw, untouched nature. Little manmaid constructions. Fees to most popular tourist attractions are not common. Few salesman selling tourists merchendice (is that maybe bad?).

The bad: Not much service: Toilets Trashcans Information Signs Not many good manmaid walking paths.

Iceland is getting more popular for tourists, partly because it is cheap because of our currency That means more traffic to our most popular tourist attractions. That can damage the surroundings and the nature – In Iceland, because it is so cold, most all damage takes long time to heal itself.

Because of this, there is a discussion in Iceland to start collect fees for the most popular tourist sites. With this money there could be set up toilets, informations centers and stuff like that. This is really contriversial in Iceland because Icelanders don´t want to pay to see their own country. Should we just collect fees from foreign tourists?

All in all we think that Iceland has a pretty ecofrindly and sustainable tourism. However, the future gives us new problem as tourism is getting more popular, with more people and damage to nature. This is something that we Icelanders will have to think about and find a solution for in the next future.
