Acid Rain is formed when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, formed when fossil fuels are burnt, react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen and oxidants.
Reducing Acid Rain. Reduce SO 2 and NO x Energy conservation Use coal containing less sulfur Use scrubbers in smokestacks Substitute natural gas for coal.

Method of Geography

Many Specialized Fields of Geography Economic Geography Urban Geography Political Geography Historical Geography Cultural Geography ** Method of study- is what binds all of these together. (the manner in which the material is collected, analyzed and presented)

Acid Rain (Example)

Acid Rain (Example) Chemistry – understand how sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide react with moisture in the air to produce acid rain Biology – understand its effect on life forms from algae to fish to trees. Economics – cost of installing smokestack scrubbers that will reduce pollution from coal-burning factories and power plants. Geographer – look at all of these areas and reach practical solutions that are presented to the public, industries or the government.

How do Geographer’s Look at the world? As a distinct physical body called Earth As an interconnected physical, chemical, and biological environment As a place where human beings live

Using the Geographic Method to Answer Questions and Solve Problems (See table p.9) Ask Questions. Collect data Organize and display data 4) Analyze and interpret data 5) Make your decision Example: Buying your first car.

Opening a Restaurant Case Study With a partner, apply the geographic method as you consider the case study on page 8.
