ASCA National Model Competency II-C-3 School counselors demonstrate their attitudes and beliefs that all students deserve access to a comprehensive program that: promotes and supports academic achievement, career planning and personal/social development for every student.

Comprehensive School Counseling Program and the 3 Domains A comprehensive school counseling program supports students in the three domains of: Academic achievement Career planning Personal/Social development At SMS, students access the school counseling program, and work in these domains through: Classroom guidance lessons Individual counseling Small group counseling Large group instruction At SMS, the school counselor works in these domains through: Counseling services – individual and small group Collaboration with teachers, administrators, parents, and community agencies

Academic achievement

Academic Achievement As the school counselor at SMS, I work in collaboration with many people to support student academic achievement. Teachers Administrators Parents School social worker School psychologist Students

Academic Achievement Activities related to school counseling and academic achievement include: Attending grade, team, and department level meetings Directing SWAT (School-wide Assistance Team) meetings and procedures Attending professional development training Working with the school psychologists for special placement Collaborating with the school social worker on attendance concerns Parent contacts and parent/teacher conferences

Academic Achievement As a school counselor, I also work directly with students to impact academic achievement through the following activities: Classroom guidance lessons on study skills, test- taking skills, time management, and organizational skills Individual student academic counseling Student grade tracking Student/parent/teacher conferences High school registration and transition planning

Career planning

Career Planning It is important for students to have the knowledge and information necessary to plan for their future careers. Career exploration is provided through the school counseling department and the 8th grade computers and technology curriculum. Students use technology and hands-on activities to explore careers.

Career Planning Career planning activities include: Using CFNC.org to complete interest inventories and explore career options Working with the district CTE coordinator to complete 4-year plans for high school and prepare for careers Attend local college and career fairs, including the career fair hosted at SMS

Personal/social development

Personal/Social Development The personal/social development of students focuses on improving the skills necessary to be socially and emotionally high functioning. Personal/social development can include: Conflict resolution Conversation and interpersonal skills Intrapersonal skills Communication skills

Personal/Social Development Personal/social development activities can include: Classroom guidance lessons Social skills Communication Character education Individual counseling Small group counseling Conflict resolution counseling One-on-one with counselor Small group with counselor

Summary

Summary School counselors must support and promote the three domains of academic achievement, career planning, and personal/social development. In order to best serve students in all three areas, school counselors must collaborate with students, teachers, administrators, student services personnel, parents, community agencies, and other stakeholders.
