Presentation transcript:

If you were Nick would you invite Daisy to your house for tea so she could meet Gatsby? If your answer is yes how do you feel about promoting adultery? If your answer is no why are you depriving both Daisy and Gatsby of happiness?

What’s with all the names? The vulgarity of the names Gatsby lists such as S.W. Belcher, the Smirks, Miss Hagg combined with the briefly noted activities of those named, gives a portrait of Jazz Age society The timetable is in effect July 5, 1922 –July 4th is of course the great American holiday, and so these are the people who appeared the day after the Declaration of American independence. They represent what has become of American idealism in a corrupt age

The Landscape On their trip into New York, Nick and Gatsby drive over a symbolic landscape 1st pass through the desolation of the valley of ashes (representing reality and the sense of corruption is heightened by the encounter with the policeman)

How did Gatsby get rich anyways? Nick receives a hint in the form of the gambler Meyer Wolfsheim of how Gatsby really amassed his wealth Suggests that Gatsby’s wealth may be based on corruption

The Mission of the Woman Gatsby believes he can win his woman with wealth, that he can attain the ideal she stands for through material affluence
