The Beginning Lasted from 1400 to 1700. Renaissance- Rebirth of art and learning. Reasons why the Renaissance began in Italy - War and plague ended - Italian cities were thriving A wealthy merchant class Ideas from classical Greece and Rome

Old Church Teachings and Way of Thinking Piety- Simple and plain. You should sacrifice and give to others on earth so that you will be rewarded in Heaven.

Piety

Humanism Focus on human potential and achievement. How good can we be? What is perfection in our eyes? What is normal? What do we perceive as normal?

Secularism Worldly. Concerned with the here and now. The basic spirit of the renaissance. I want to live well and enjoy material things. Selfish not selfless. I gotta get mine! Show me the money! It’s all about the Benjamin’s baby! I’m looking out for #1!

EXAMPLES OF SECULARISM

Patron Someone who supports something or someone financially. Ex: The Medici family who ruled Florence, Italy. They supported artists of the period.

Renaissance Man or Woman Qualifications All educated people of the period were expected to create art. A renaissance man or woman had to excel in many fields. Three examples are Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Niccolo Machiavelli.

Michelangelo Humanist painter and sculptor. Most famous for sculpting the Statue of David and painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Leonard Da Vinci Painter, sculptor, inventor, and scientist. Famous for painting the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. Creator of many inventions and ideas. Created the first drawings of the internal human body.

Vernacular Everyday, common, native language of a particular area or region. Examples- Ya’ll, cuz, homeboy, breh, yes ma’am, bloke, pop. What would you get if you ordered fish and chips in London, England?

Niccolo Machiavelli Author of “The Prince”. Examined the imperfect qualities of humans. Central idea is that most people are selfish, fickle, and corrupt. The book taught rulers how to use peoples’ imperfections against them in order to get them to do what the ruler wanted them to do
