Humanism Focus on human potential and achievement. How good can we be? What is perfection in our eyes? What is normal? What do we perceive as normal?

Secularism Worldly. Concerned with the here and now. The basic spirit of the renaissance. I want to live well and enjoy material things. Selfish not selfless. I gotta get mine! Show me the money! It’s all about the Benjamin’s baby! I’m looking out for #1!

Renaissance Man or Woman Qualifications All educated people of the period were expected to create art. A renaissance man or woman had to excel in many fields. Three examples are Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Niccolo Machiavelli.

Michelangelo Humanist painter and sculptor. Most famous for sculpting the Statue of David and painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Niccolo Machiavelli Author of “The Prince”. Examined the imperfect qualities of humans. Central idea is that most people are selfish, fickle, and corrupt. The book taught rulers how to use peoples’ imperfections against them in order to get them to do what the ruler wanted them to do
