Beginning of Political Parties Group of people who share the same ideas on how the gov’t should be run No PP’s when Washington becomes Pres. unanimous choice by electoral college 2 cabinet members had different ideas Hamilton (Federalists) Jefferson (Democratic-Republicans)

First Political Parties Federalists Hamilton, Jay, Adams Rich, well-born, old aristocracy, large land owners, businessmen North (industrial) Loose Construction Gov’t should be run by rich & well educated Sided with British Supported Hamilton’s Plan, tarriff & excise tax Democratic-Republicans Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Burr Farmers, poor, plantation owners South (agricultural) Strict Construction Gov’t run by the “common man” Sided with French Believed Hamilton’s plan favored the rich
